REVIEW:
Nimona is a very lively and fun animated movie, made in the style of traditional 2D, hand-drawn animation. We haven’t seen that style done on the big screen in ages. The only semi-recent example was the modern Christmas classic Klaus, in 2019, (also a Netflix movie, just like this one.) But what’s even more impressive is that the story is really good.
In a part-futuristic, part-Medieval setting, our main character is a knight accused of murder who teams up with a shape-shifting, anarchy-driven child (Nimona.) Her appetite for destruction is what drives the movie, as Nimona changes into every animal and creature you can imagine, and has a whole lot of fun doing it.
The action is a blast, as she fiends her time knocking over guards or hurting through castle walls. But what really makes this movie are all of the twists and turns and reveals that come out in the second half and continue to build on each other. The humor and action are fun, and while the story might feel somewhat familiar (wrongfully accused fugitive on the run, needing to escape the authorities and also prove his innocence,) this one definitely gets the job done.
