Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga ***1/2

REVIEW:

Another great entry into this world by director George Miller. Most people say Mad Max Fury Road was the best entry in this series, and was Miller’s masterpiece. And maybe they’re right. But this follow up film is pretty close to being just as good. The way this guy captures weirdness of characters and costumes and shots of giant crazy vehicles is just unreal.

The story here is just okay. It’s a prequel, and so it’s the story of the Furious character from Mad Max, starting with her as a child. And for what it’s worth, this movie does a pretty good job of fleshing out a whole story for her, including an entire first half or so with her as a teenager, disguising herself as a mute boy and working her way up the ladder of the ranks at Immorten Joe’s Citadel.

The movie really expands on and also clarifies the world that these characters are living in, showing us distinctively that there are only three cities people can live in.. The Citadel, Gas Town, or The Bullet Farm. And Dementus, our villain in this movie (played nicely by Chris Hemsworth, who is having a field day being as crazy and fun as he wants to be with this part,) takes over Gas Town by force.

Earlier on in the movie, Dementus killed Furiosa’s mom, establishing him as a villain. So now this is a revenge movie, with her holding onto her anger until she is of an age and ability level where she can actually do something about it. To get to this level, Furiosa befriends and starts working with the best driver in town who has no allegiance to anybody but himself, yet offers to take her under his wing realizing that he’s in need of a new team himself. It works. So does the action. I suppose with this movie the effects feel more computerized and fake then with the prior film, but it still looks great and unique and unlike anything else. Mad Max Fury Road was a good deal shorter than this movie, and that is definitely an advantage since this one seems to go on a littler too long. Other than that though, it’s a pretty solid movie.
