REVIEW:
Nowhere near as good as the first movie, this one takes a more comedic and ridiculous tone. Now, obviously the concept of a cyborg cop is out there to begin with, but this movie has Robocop giving pep talks to kids, has little kids attack and bloody adults, and even has a kid as one of the main villains. It’s all a little too strange, and not as funny as I suppose it thinks.
The story here is similar to that of the first one, in terms of a corporation that tries to take over the police force and has connections to hardened street criminals. This time the street criminals are a gang that sells a drug called Nuke. And just like the first movie, this one features a giant robot to go up against Robocop. In fact, in that area this movie is an improvement, since the giant robot in the first movie was only in about two scenes and was taken out very easily. Here, we see its development, from the moment the concept was proposed, and follow the path of creation of this robot, including the criminal who is used for the human parts.
The movie has a bunch of changes from the first one, even if its plot is similar. Robocop is now blue instead of silver, which is actually a cool change giving him a nice new look. He moves in a silly way when he walks, swinging his arms around way more than he needs to be. And that killer theme music from the first movie is nowhere to be found in this one. Other than that, though, the plot is similar without being as interesting or clear. There are one too many organizations here, between the cops on strike, the drug dealing gang, the tech company that makes the machines, and the mayor who thinks the tech company is trying to sabotage the cops on purpose so that they can bring in their own police force. They overload us on plot and instead of interesting, it just makes things confusing. But the action is cool. Especially in the later scenes. And that goes a long way. The first movie handled the tone and ideas flawlessly. This sequel does not. It definitely feels like an imitation, but at least they got the villainous robot and action right.
