REVIEW:
Here’s the latest entry in the Sony Spider-man Villains universe. It’s the weirdest little “experiment,” in expensive movie-making. They can’t (or don’t want to,) actually use Spider-man in any form (they have Tom Holland’s Spider-man over at Marvrel, plus the animated Spider-man Spiderverse movies, so they don’t want to do anymore.) And do instead, they decided to make a bunch of movies about Spider-man villains. Only in each one of these movies, the villain is actually more of a hero fighting a bigger, badder villain.
It’s all really stupid, and Kraven the Hunter is the latest of these. They started with Venom (which is now a trilogy,) and also include Morbius and Madame Webb. And to add on to the level of how dumb these things are, Sony never even connects them. None of the characters from one movie ever appear in the others. I mean that was the obvious sauce that got Marvel up and running.
So here we have Kraven, one of the few well-known Spider-man villains who has yet to be in a movie. That’s because he’s a little too human. Nothing monstrous or robotic about him. He’s just a guy who’s good at hunting and killing. And despite having a nice cast, with Aaron Taylor Johnson and Russell Crowe, this one is just as big of a dud as the others. The R rating doesn’t help it. As far as that goes, it’s too little too late. The Venom movies should have been rated R. Especially the one featuring Carnage. By this point, we just don’t care anymore.
Honestly, the only thing that could possibly reawaken us to these movies and make us care even a little, is to bring in a version of Spider-man. The Andrew Garfield version if nothing else. But Sony does not want to do that. Instead they just want to add more snd more villains to the mix. So the Rhino is here as the main villain, and thank goodness for that because he’s the only thing cool about the movie. It’s a slight step in the right direction, but it’s not enough. The first half of this movie is a bore and the second half is just waiting to see the Rhino appear in full form. For Sony, it’s just another blunder. Add it to the list.
