Barbie ***

REVIEW:

The Barbie movie is something different. It’s a live action movie made about an iconic toy, told from a real world perspective for adults. To address each of those points, starting with the adults idea, let’s be clear. Kids can see this movie. And they will enjoy it. But the story and the humor, and the understanding of everything going on is definitely on a level for adults. There are some very smart ideas here, and if kids don’t get all of those, it’s okay. They don’t need to. But this is definitely a movie that adults will enjoy, and that goes a long way. This one is PG-13 and deals with things such as death, stereotypes, body image, and social acceptability.

Funny yet preachy, there are definitely a lot of messages here, both about men and women. There’s a lot to take in, and everyone, from Margot Robbie to Ryan Gosling to Simou Lieu as an alternate Ken, is really going for it. Sometimes the movie feels like a little much, like it’s really trying to bang you over the head with a message, but overall this one is pretty good, and loaded with interesting and creative ideas.
