REVIEW:
Companion is an incredibly unique and fascinating movie. It’s not really comedy, but more sci-fi meets horror or thriller in this tale about a boy and his robot. Josh and Iris are dating. They seemingly have a very sweet relationship. And Josh takes Iris to a fabulous mansion in the middle of nowhere to spend a weekend with his closest friends. Only things don’t go as planned.
When Iris is attacked by one of the other guests who forces himself on her, all hell breaks loose. Suddenly secrets are revealed, left and right, and most of them you never see coming. Iris is a robot, and that means a number of the stories and things we’ve seen happen to her earlier on in the movie, actually never happened at all. They are just memories that were implanted in her brain.
Once that attack happens (the big event to end act 1,) we are suddenly thrown into a great thriller of a futuristic movie. We learn new things about each of the other characters, that we were’t expecting to hear. This is exactly what you want from this kind of movie. A story that takes chances, and doesn’t necessarily need to be about the good guy. It’s a hell of a movie, loaded with some very creative ideas. In many ways it feel like an episode of the show Black Mirror, and that’s some pretty good company to be in.
