Deadpool and Wolverine ***1/2

REVIEW:

The thing about Deadpool and Wolverine is, it pretty much did as much as it could. What I mean by that is there is no way that this movie could have possibly met all of the expectation. It wasn’t going to be everything to everyone. To be more specific, there was a whole lot that people were hoping for from this one. People expected this to be the movie that said goodbye to the Fox Marvel Universe, that said goodbye to the Fox X-Men Universe, to bring Deadpool and Wolverine together, to introduce them both into the Marvel Universe, and to tell it’s own Deadpool story including the usual Deadpool characters. Did the movie do all of those things? No. But it did some of them, and it had fun doing it, and in many ways that’s enough.

Of the things on the list, the movie did bring Deadpool and Wolverine’s story together in some very comical ways. And it did say goodbye to the Fox Marvel Universe. Without getting specific about which characters are in the movie, there is a major lack of X-Men characters here, and surprisingly that’s okay, It’s okay because there are plenty of other nostalgia characters to make up for it. There’s only so much fan service a movie can do before it becomes all about that. And this movie, contrary to what some are saying, is not only about fan service. In fact, it has just the right amount of that, including a very cool montage where we see a bunch of different Wolverines.

The story is about how Deadpool’s universe is about to be destroyed because the anchor being (Wolverine) has been killed. So Deadpool is about to lose everyone he knows and loves (as well as himself.) And so he goes on a mission to resurrect or find another Wolverine and change the path where his universe will be destroyed. The opening, where Deadpool digs up Wolverine’s bones and uses them to fight is priceless. And the idea of sending the two of them into a world of discarded characters is also pretty great. This movie definitely gets an A plus for cameos.

Aside from those things, the comedy is pretty sharp as it is in all Deadpool movies. And the action is pretty solid. Now the movie isn’t exceptional in either of those areas, but it’s still pretty good in both of them. Some of the set pieces for the action help to combine it with the comedy. For example, there’s a very funny car fight where the entire fight takes place inside of a car. Aside from the cameos, which are all a lot of fun, and include some of the better jokes of the film, we also get a bunch of returning X-Men villains. Some are played by the real actors who portrayed them in the original movies, some aren’t. And that’s okay. The actual villains of this movie (there are two of them, one with powers, one without,) are just okay. Still, the movie does work. It works because of its seamless combination of action and comedy, and all of the cameos and Easter eggs just help it along.
