REVIEW:
Dune was a cool movie. It was a whole lot of world building and setup for the next movies to come, and with that being said it’s not nearly as good as some of the other world building first movies of a trilogy such as The Fellowship of the Ring or Star Wars, A New Hope. But Dune is different. For one thing it’s a whole lot darker.
The movie was made by Denis Villanueve and it is right in his wheel house of smart sci-fi. Here we have the story of House Atrides, that is suddenly called upon by the Emperor (a character who we never see and is no doubt being saved for the next two movies,) to take over leadership of the Fermen, a group of sand dwelling people in the desert, who reside over the spice mines.
Only what seems like a promotion and new responsibilities might actually be a trap, as House Atrides suddenly finds itself being attacked by two armies at once. Sounds like an action movie, right? It’s not. Despite having the storyline that would make for cool battles, this one strives away from those things, and gives us very minimal action. Instead, what it gives us is lots of characters and rules of the world. It’s not exactly easy to follow, but there is a cool storyline here, and a strong promise of things to come.
