REVIEW:
This is a pretty dull and uninteresting movie. It’s about a woman who is caught between two guys, and not sure which one to chose, as it’s incredibly basic title suggests. There’s no doubt that the stellar cast signed on to make this one just to work with director James L Brooks, (Terms of Endearment, As Good As It Gets,) because there’s next to nothing original creative here.
The likable stars include Reese Witherspoon, Paul Rudd, Owen Wilson, and Jack Nicholson. Reese plays Lisa, the girl who finds herself lost in life when her baseball team cuts her. That’s one of the opening scenes in the movie, and perhaps the most interesting scene in the entire film. After that, she just bounces around between relaxed, cool guy Marty (Wilson,) and nerdy depressed guy, George (Rudd.)
The movie deserves some credit for not making Marty a jerk, the way most romantic comedies tend to treat the competition boyfriend. In fact, Matty is the only somewhat enjoyable character in this thing. His scenes aren’t great, but you can understand where he’s coming from, and his character is somewhat refreshing.
George, on the other hand, is so lifeless and awkward, he makes the movie almost painful to watch. And the storyline with his father and some kind of corruption that George knew nothing about, isn’t any better. It would have been more interesting if George actually did know something, or had something to do with it. This movie is watchable, but it really has nothing new to offer, and is a bit of a mess.
