In Good Company ***1/2

REVIEW:

Part Jerry McGuire, part Garden State, this little-know, easily-forgotten movie is actually very good. The movie goes against the grain, being about corporate takeover and job reshuffling more than it is about the romance between Topher Grace and Scarlett Johansen. In fact, that romance subplot takes a backseat to most of this film, with Scar Jo only having a relatively small part. Perhaps that’s a big reason why this movie is so little remembered, since she is the big star of today and the two real leads of the movie have kind of petered out in their acting popularity. But for a small amount of time, Topher Grace was on a roll (Traffic, this movie, and Take Me Home Tonight,) and this movie definitely showed his skills. The film is about a company that goes through firings and hirings like it is body reflex, and that lands young Carter Dureia (Grace,) as boss of a company he knows nothing about, while having longtime career-oriented sports writer Dan, (Dennis Quaid,) now working under him. The dynamics and comedy between the two of them are rich. The music gives this one a Garden State / Good Will Hunting, feel of reminding us that this is comedy with. deeper meaning. But what we really have here is a movie about business, which is not something you see very often. That’s where the Jerry McGuire angle comes in, with Dan calling out how ridiculous some of the practices and ideas are. This one is smart, different, and a lot of fun
