REVIEW:
Kpop Demon Hunters is a fun, energetic animated movie, with the same level of passion as we’ve been getting from movies like the Spiderverse Sony animated films. This is a movie where style far outweighs story, and that’s perfectly okay, because there’s so much attention put into the style that it’s hard not to love. Between the colors, the movements, the humor, and the music, there’s so much here that is worthwhile. Even the story about a girl band of demon hunters that now must face their biggest challenge yet… a boy band of demons, is quite funny. The story about one of the group members having a secret that she’s hiding from the others is nothing new, but this world that this movie has created, is what we are really there for. The world and rules include the “patterns,” that demons have on their skin, as well as the things these characters do for fun, like “couch,” or visiting the bath house.
The movie is also very smart in the way it repeats music throughout, so that we get more and more used to the songs, and appreciate them more, the more times we hear them. All of that, plus some very cool demon-slaying action, this movie is a blast. The girls are all great, but I especially like Jin, a guy who starts out too cool for school, only to peel back layers and reveal his troubled past that he can’t seem to forgive himself for. It’s pretty deep, and helps deliver the emotional angle in a movie that already has everything else working for it.
