REVIEW:
Not an especially good entry, this movie does some nice things for the nostalgia and Easter Eggs of the series, but that’s about it. What it does not do is kill any significant characters. And yet it pretends to. It keeps faking us out, showing us characters get stabbed over and over again only to learn later that they miraculously survived. It feels like a major cheat and a cop out, and like they are afraid to kill any character who has been in any past movie. The New York City setting is kind of cool, and it’s nice that they use both the subway and Central Park, but at the same time, this movie doesn’t really do anything that we haven’t seen before. The ladder climb from one building to another sequence, for example, is right out of the movie Judgement Night. The way that the killer keeps dropping masks from the killers in previous movies is neat, and the shrine to past Scream movies is cool, but when you realize nearly every character killed is just a throw away person who just shows up in one scene (like people who happened to be in a bodega,) as opposed to the real characters, it makes you kind of stop caring.
