Slither *1/2

REVIEW:

This is a pretty awful monster movie. It’s about an alien slug that comes to earth, and takes over the bodies of people, turning them into deformed creatures with tentacles that come out of their chests. This is James Gunn’s first movie, and he has sure come. a long way since then, from Super to Guardians of the Galaxy to The Suicide Squad to being the head of DC Studios. But none of that matters when looking at this movie, which is just awful. The cast has promising up and comers like Elizabeth Banks and Nathan Fillion, and even Michael Rooker, who had been around at that point. But the story here is incredibly weak, as the town is overrun by these creatures. It’s the Fly meets Night of the Living Dead, only not half as interesting as either of those. There are gross out moments to be sure, but the main thing here is that this is just stupid. Even the town setting ensures that this feels like something we have seen before, as opposed to a movie like Deep Rising, which is a by the numbers genre movie, but at least takes place in a new location (a cruise ship.) Not so much here. Everything is familiar or dopey or both. This one is a waste of time.
