REVIEW:
Another misfire for Marvel, at this point they have fallen very far from where they began. Very far from Iron Man, and Captain America, and even Hulk. The first Captain Marvel movie was fine. It was pretty good. And to get an idea of how this one compares, just look at the cast… in the “villain” roles of that movie, you had Ben Mendelson, Annette Benning, and Jude Law. In The Marvels, you have an unknown actress playing an unknown villain. And this villain is definitely one of the weaker parts of the film.
Truth be told, there isn’t a whole lot to like about this movie. The post credits scenes are strong (although one comes before the credits and the other one in the mid credits, so that tells you something about Marvel’s confidence level these days.) But aside from those, the movie doesn’t have a lot to offer. The action is so CGI that you don’t even think for a moment that these actors are actually doing the stunts. And the story, about the villain finding a bangle that makes it so that Captain Marvel, Mrs Marvel, and Monica Rambeau all switch places whenever they use their powers, is very one-noted.
There is so much that would have made this movie cooler, including ties to past films, like the Guardians movies. How about showing us that this villain was close with Ronan the Accuser (villain from the first Guardians,) or referencing Thanos? This movie makes all the wrong steps including having a planet where everyone sings instead of speaks. It feels right out of Thor: Love and Thunder, with the screaming goats. This movie should have been so much better. As is, it is one of the weakest Marvel films yet.
