REVIEW:
Unfrosted is funny, while also being inconsequential and forgettable. The humor is old fashioned and zany in a way that only Jerry Seinfeld could do. This movie not only stars Seinfeld, but was also written and directed by him. Clearly Seinfeld is a renaissance man of the entertainment industry, trying to prove he can do it all, from his sitcom to standup comedy to an internet show (Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee) to starring in an animated film (Bee Movie,) to now writing, directing, and starring in a film. And what works about it is that this is very much Seinfeld’s brand of comedy. The one-liners and clever moments are there, but the big picture is where this movie is lacking.
That is to say this is a movie about the development of the Pop Tart. It’s so basic and so simple, that one has to think, well there must be an amazing story there. Otherwise why make this movie. Only there isn’t. The story itself, about two cereal companies competing with each other to get the breakfast pastry product on the shelves first, is pretty straight forward and ordinary. What does make the movie, however, are all of the cereal mascots parading around from time to time. Not just Tony the Tiger (played by Hugh Grant,) but also Snap, Crackle, and Pop, as well as some others. The story has some parts that work and others (like a ravioli-shaped thing that comes to life,) that don’t. It’s not a great film, but it is witty and worth a few laughs. The movie also boosts one of the greatest cameos by two men portraying characters they are known for, in ages. For Seinfeld, this one is not spectacular, but it’s good enough and different enough to definitely be considered a success.
