One Liner Review:

A pretty fantastic superhero movie, from it’s creative origin story to it’s surprise villain to it’s fun and exciting action.

Brief Review:

The best of the bunch. Perhaps the best superhero movie ever (a runner up would be Batman Begins, also an origin story.) Iron Man takes origin to the next level. It isn’t just a first half origin kind of thing, but instead nearly the entire movie is about the origin. It’s about figuring out the costume and the idea of why it is necessary. It is about Tony Stark going head to head with his board (also something that happens in Batman Begins,) only here, it is about having a moral awakening and realizing what his weapons are being used for around the world. The best thing about this movie is the way it takes its time to show us every new development in the Iron Man suit. The careful analysis of how they build the first version in a cave, early on in the film, is just the start. On top of that, Jeff Bridges is a fantastic villain and is truly menacing. The stakes might not be end of world domination like some of the other movies, but that’s another reason why this one is so good… it stays grounded and semi-realistic, taking the time to treat its subject seriously. Plus Downey Jr is just perfect in the part.

REVIEW:

Iron Man is the superhero movie that gets everything right. The last time a superhero movie was anywhere close to this good was Christopher Nolan’s first batman movie, Batman Begins, and even that film lacked a sense of humor. Iron Man, on the other hand, has got humor in spades. And yet it’s not a comedy. It’s an action movie with a lead character, Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.), who is just a laid-back playboy billionaire with a hell of a sense of humor. This guy is not only relaxed and funny, but also super smart. His one flaw is arrogance, and he doesn’t seem to care about that one a bit.

 

The movie opens with a car ride in military hummvees, through a desert in Afghanistan. We get into one of the vehicles with Tony Stark and a bunch of soldiers and listen to their conversation, which is filled with jokes. Then suddenly the hummer they are riding in blows up, the men outside of the vehicle are killed, and Tony ends up getting taken prisoner by a group of terrorists. Hell of an opening. Great setup. And now the movie cuts to twenty-four hours earlier and we see an awards ceremony that begins with a video montage of Tony and his father and the way Tony rose up and took his father’s place. The video is filled with magazine covers and newspaper headlines about Tony’s life in the technology business, and it also shows a lot of Obadiah Stain (Jeff Bridges), the character who used to be the partner of Tony’s father. Now Obadiah is Tony’s partner.

 

Stark industries manufactures weapons and that’s the reason why Stark is out there in the desert to begin with. He’s there to demonstrate a new missile, known as the Jericho. He even gives a cool little speech before the demonstration about how the best weapon is the kind you only have to fire once. Then we get the demonstration and then the scene of him in the hummer and the attack. Now we are back to where the movie began, and ready to move forward with the story. Lots of movies begin with the flash forward, the same way that this movie did, but the scene that they are flash forwarding to doesn’t actually come until the end of the movie. This movie takes a very different approach. It goes back to just a little bit before the event to show us the immediate situation leading up to it, and then we are off an running, all caught up and where we need to be. It’s a very smart approach.

 

Now come the traumatic situation where Stark is being held captive. He is a prisoner in a cave, being held by a group of terrorists, and being forced to build a weapon for them. Only he doesn’t build it. Instead, he builds a suit which is big and clunky and will be the original prototype for the Iron Man suit. He has a pretty great escape scene where he slams down his giant metal fists on bad guys and sends them flying across the cave. But even with all this, the movie doesn’t forget to show us what could happen to him if things don’t go completely right. At one point a terrorist gets a clear shot and tries to shoot him in the head. He learns the meaning of bullet-proof pretty quickly. And Stark’s friend, Jensen, who has been helping him through all of this, meets his end in some pretty dramatic fashion. Gentry’s telling of his family is pretty sad and deep.

 

Stark ends his escape with flame throwers and rockets that propel him into the air and away from the camp. He lands in the desert and is rescued by a military search party. And once all of this is over, Stark is back in the states with Pepper Potts, his assistant (played by Gwenyth Paltrow,) calling a press conference to let the world know that his eyes have been opened. He’s no longer going to let his company make weapons that can go directly to terrorists. It’s time to start being accountable. This definitely rub Obadiya the wrong way. It’s the start of where Jeff Bridges as a villain comes out, and boy does this guy play the part well.

 

But while Tony is battling the board and his decision making on what to do with the weapons, he is also designing and redesigning the suit.  Throughout the movie he keeps making changes and improvements, and the movie really takes its time with showing us how he got the suit to the place and look of what it has today.  There are some great tests of the flight equipment, and a really cool moment where Tony is sticking his hand into a hologram projection of the wrist armor and moving it around. Another one has him get rid of virtual projection parts and throw them into a virtual recycling bin. It’s all pretty cool and a lot of fun to watch.

 

Tony’s relationship with Obadayia is a big part of this movie. And the story wisely lets the reality of who Obadiya is and what he has done hit us as a slow burn. We see him out in the desert, looking at the remains of the suit that Tony wore when he escaped and we learn a little bit more about his true agenda. Jeff Bridges is such a great actor who unfortunately got pigeon-holed into played parts similar to the Dude, in the Big Lebowski, a little too often. Here, in Iron Man, he is going for something totally different and new, and he is hitting it right out of the park.

 

 

This is a superhero movie with brains. It’s not only got the great action, but also the thinking man’s storyline. There’s plenty of creativity spread out in action scenes, going around here, including an aerial dogfight scene where Iron Man takes on two fighter jets that are sent out to get him. And then there’s a cool scene where he goes back to a village in Afghanistan and fights off all the terrorists there. And somehow every moment seems fresh. Every move this guy makes is meant to show off another amazing thing about his suit and it’s capabilities. By doing that, nothing ever feels repetitive or tiresome, and we just keep being more and more impressed.

 

 

There are lots of relationships at play here, which is to be expected in an origin story. And most of them are pretty entertaining. Obadiya and Tony have sort of a father-son relationship, (until they don’t.) and Tony and his military best friend, Rhodey (Jim Rhodes, played by Terrence Howard,) have a lot of humorous banter back and forth. Even the story with Pepper Potts takes its time to develop their relationship and explain how it evolves. This movie doesn’t overload us on characters, (notice that John Favreaus’s Happy, the driver, is barely in this movie,) and yet the ones it does give us are just the right amount to get the job done and feel good about it.

 

While the best thing about Iron Man is the way that it takes its time to develop the suit and show us all of the trail and error in making it,  the action and characters are pretty great too. This is the movie where we really get a sense of the layout of Tony’s cliffside mansion. This is the movie where we see the ins and outs of him putting on the suit, (that level of detail is never seen again in any of the other films.) And this is definitely the movie where we go deep inside his character and the levels of regret he has, in a way that Marvel movies did not come anywhere close to again until Black Panther. It’s one hell of a film.

EXTRA ANALYSIS:

There’s a lot going on here, and a lot that makes this movie great. For one thing, Tony Stark really doesn’t get the suit right, or any of the things he’s testing right the first time. It takes practice and work. For example, during his escape in the desert, he is able to get the suit airborne for a few moments, but then crashes down into the sand shortly afterwards. Later on, he does a jet propulsion test that sends him flying backwards into a ceiling wall. He also does a landing test that drops him down through multiple floors, until he finally crash lands on top of a car. This really is the figuring it out, using trial by error, movie.

Another amazing thing about the movie, of course, is the way it shows the evolution of the suit. From the first version, the heavy iron cave version, to the sleek silver version to the final red and gold version. But what stands out on a further watching is that while Tony Stark is upgrading his original suit and making all sorts of advances to it, (including a new and more powerful arc reactor at its core,) Obadiah as well as the terrorists he’s hired (the Ten Rings, led by Raza,) as trying to piece back together Tony’s original suit. In other words, Tony’s going for the advanced version and the villains are just trying to copy and steal the ideas of Tony’s old, original version. It’s like they are chasing the past while he is moving forward into the future, building on his original ideas, that they are just trying to discover.

One of the best things about the movie has always been the use of multiple villains and the way that one leads to the next. For example, there’s one heavy terrorist in the Ten Rings, who is the first to check on Stark and give him orders, while Stark is a captive. While dealing with this villain, we only get to see Raza in the background, looking on. Then later we meet Raza, the man behind the curtain. And then as we go on further, we learn that this goes way deeper than Raza and the Ten Things. In fact, one of the absolute coolest things about the movie is the way that Obadiah Stain becomes a villain (or that we learn he’s a villain,) as the movie goes on. It’s a hell of a twist that he’s the one who hired Raza to kill Stark. And. one has to wonder why, when everything was going so well for the two of them, leading up to this. But obviously Obadiah wanted to be the big boss himself, and was jealous of this “kid,” who got to take over his father’s company.

So there are a couple of terrific reveals here, involving Obadiah. The first is when he pops out of a car in the desert, to visit Raza, and we see that he, personally, is the one selling the weapons to Raza. Then the second reveal comes towards the end of the movie when Pepper gets on Obadiah’s computer and clicks on a video that shows he hired Raza to kidnap and kill Tony Stark. Now, why Obadiah would ever save this incriminating evidence against him makes no sense at all, but let’s at least it was hidden and encoded and encrypted and all that kind of stuff.

Another cool thing about this movie is the use of twos. We see Stark’s arc reactor get removed from his chest, and him go into cardiac arrest twice, first with Pepper helping him and then later on with Obadiah taking the arc reactor out. The reason why seeing it twice is important is because the first time is setup, establishing the rules of what can happen and how all these scenarios work. The second time is when it actually comes into play as a serious threat. Another example is the paralysis sound waves device that Obadiah first uses on Raza and then later uses on Tony Stark.

Other great things here include the extreme character arc of going from a guy who only cares about money, fame, and living the good life, to a man who actually takes responsibility. There’s a whole lot of that here, about a man who realizes his weapons are being used to hurt people and are being sold to the bad guys and accepts that he is the one responsible, as he was not careful about following up on who was getting their hands on them. This movie is about business almost as much as it is about action (I kind of wish there was at least one board room scene where Stark had to explain to the board why he was doing what he was doing and how it would hurt the company, but still he would find ways to keep the company afloat.) For example, when he comes back from Afghanistan, where he was being held captive, Stark doesn’t just have one agenda, to turn on his company and go after the weapons they sold, wherever they are around the world. He also has a second agenda, which is to make technology powered by arc reactors. This is the scene where Obadiah rides up in a Segway and says things to Tony like, “the arc reactor was a publicity stunt. We did it to appease the hippies.” It would have been nice to know more about Starks’ plan for this (it is never said that he’s going to use this for weapons, so what then? Clean energy?) But I suppose this movie is already packed to the brim and couldn’t really handle too much more.

There’s so much in this movie that works, from the initial prototype and cave escape scenes to the scenes of Obadiah’s progress (we see the original Iron Man suit, not only when Stark first makes it, but then when the Ten Rings find the pieces out in the desert, to when the full suit is standing up in Raza’s tent after they have put all the pieces together, to when Pepper and Agent Phil Caulson come across the original suit standing up inside of Obadiah’s bunker-lab. It’s also pretty cool how Obadiah’s Iron Monger suit is basically just a bigger version of Stark’s original vision and suit. Like Obadiah didn’t really have any ideas of his own, in terms of aesthetic and artistic look and style.

By comparison, there’s very little that doesn’t work here. In fact, there’s really just one moment that’s confusing or a little too convenient. Unfortunately it happens to be the moment where the villain dies. Stark is handing from the ceiling of the building that houses the arc reactor. Obadiah is standing up on the ceiling in his Iron Monger suit. Pepper electrocutes the ceiling. Now you would think that Stark would get it the worst from this, falling from the ceiling that he was hanging from, down into the arc reactor. Instead, when Stark gets hit by the blast, he gets pushed or thrown out of the hole in the roof, so that he lands ontop of the roof, and Obadiah loses power to his suit, long enough for it to fall and crash through the hole in the middle of the ceiling. It just doesn’t make sense. Like how did Tony stay immune to the electrocuted roof? And would he really get thrown out, while Obadiah falls forward, in? But it’s the only moment in the entire that doesn’t quite seem right. Everything else works perfectly. And yes, there are some politically incorrect moments that would never appear in a mainstream superhero film today (the flight attendants dancing around a stripper pole? I don’t even think they could make that joke in a Deadpool movie these days,) but still, the ideas are there, and it’s kind of like we’re lucky this movie took those kinds of chances while they could still get away with them, before this world became too inventive for that sort of thing.

At the end of the day, there’s a whole lot of reasons why this movie excels. Most of all is the way is shows the development of the suit and becoming a superhero evolution, including all of the comedic failures. Secondly is the arc about responsibility, which somehow manages to come off as interesting and compelling instead of corny. And finally, there’s the villains, and ways that one villain leads to the next. This includes all of the reveals about Obadiah, and how each one is delivered with superb execution. What a terrific movie!
