REVIEW:
What a mess. For starters, DC movies are in shambles with all of the confusion between the DCEU as it was, and now James Gunn taking over as head of the studio and most likely rebooting things. What does all of that have to do with this movie? It seems like they just aren’t putting effort into quality anymore. This one is about a thousand times worse than the first Shazam movie. That one had fun and comedy and also some pretty wild villains, in not just Mark Strong, but also the demon monsters he hung around with. This new film is about Greek gods who come to earth for an ancient staff and to take over our planet. The story is lame and the comedy is not really funny at all. When the excitement boils down to an apple being planted on earth, just so a giant tree can grow, just so a bunch of seeds or eggs pop out of it, just so classic Greek monsters can hatch from those, (like the Minotaur and Cyclops,) you know things are convoluted. And that’s just a sample of how poorly written this thing is. Compare that to the first movie where Billy Batson had to deal with finding out his mother didn’t want him and left him at a carnival, pretending she had lost him. That movie actually had heart and depth. This one is a paint by the numbers, waste of time.
