Over Your Dead Body **

REVIEW:

Here’s a movie that really has nothing new to offer. It’s about a couple that hates each other and drives out to a lake to kill each other. Fair enough. That sounds like fun in a sort of a War of the Roses kind of way. But then in the second half it almost loses that whole storyline to focus on a home invasion plot. Now, I understand that a plot has to evolve and can’t stay with the same storyline forever, and that the home invasion is a new development the changes the trajectory of where this film was going, but the home invasion plot is also just so familiar. And they don’t do anything new with it at all (I wonder if the couple will rekindle feelings for each other because of this stressful situation they are in.)

What would have been far funnier would be if the couple (Dan, played by Jason Segel and Lisa, played by Samara Weaving,) used the home invasion as a means to still be trying to kill each other. Like if they spent that time trying to convince the home invaders to kill the other and even offering to help.. offering up secrets about the other one. Now that might have been funny. But instead we get the same old tired plot, including an old man father coming to the rescue at different times, as if he stepped right out of those Nobody movies. This one was somewhat interesting in the first half, when it was about the couple, but as soon as it became about something else, the originality and creativity went right out the window.
